Self guided public art tour

The Cultural Centre features a number of public artworks by some of Australia and the world's most talented artists. Each artwork has a story to tell and, in doing so, adds to the rich tapestry of the Cultural Centre. For the first time in the history of Australian sculpture, five major works were commissioned simultaneously by the Queensland Government in 1984. It was without doubt a milestone for the arts and for sculpture in particular. These commissions show not only the coming of age but also the prime role of Australian sculptors in the field of art nationally and internationally. Of the five major works, three were steel sculptures commissioned to represent 20th century development in their use of fabricated metal and nonrepresentational shapes.

Since then, the Queensland Government has maintained a commitment to public art through its programs Art Built-In and art+place, Queensland Public Art Fund, and commissioning and installing other works in and around the Cultural Centre.
